Antarctic Great Wall Station

The Antarctic Great Wall Station (62°12′59"S, 58°57′52"W) is China’s first perennial scientific research station in Antarctica completed on February 20, 1985. It is located on the Fildes Peninsula in the west of King George Island, southern Shetland Islands of Antarctica. The extreme maximum temperature in summer is 11.7℃, the extreme minimum temperature in winter is -27.7℃, and the annual average temperature is -2.1℃.

The station mainly carries out scientific observation and research such as biological research, environmental monitoring, conventional meteorological observation, observation on ice and snow, sea ice, geology and geomagnetism, seismological observation and satellite mapping. The Great Wall Station can accommodate 40 people for summer and 25 people for winter every year.

 

In 2006, the Great Wall Station was listed as one of the National Field Observation and Research Stations and was named as "Antarctic Great Wall National Key Field Observation and Research Station of Polar Ecosystem".
